SOSSA Inaugurates Parliament, Elects Principal Officers By Chukwu Daniel Ogbonna
The parliament of Social Sciences Students’ Association (SOSSA) for the 2015/2016 session was inaugurated on Thursday, 31st March 2016.
Meanwhile, the 42-member parliament has also elected the principal officers of the Hallowed Chambers, though 31 members were present at this election.
The principal officers include Ojutiwon Joshua, 400L Political Science who emerged as Speaker, Jimoh Umar, 200L Social Work, emerged as Deputy Speaker, Olaitan Adesanmi, 400L Economics emerged as Clerk and Onaolapo Mathew, 400L Geography emerged as Chief Ship.
For the speaker Ojutiwon polled 12 votes to beat his arch rivals; Femi Akinseye, 200L Mass Communication and Daniel Chima 400L Sociology, who scored 10 and 9 votes respectively.
Umar secured 16 votes to beat his counterpart, Tony Ihediri, 200L Psychology, who scored 15 votes to the post of the Deputy Speaker.
Onaolapo, polled 19 votes, to defeat his opponent, Segun Babalola 200L sociology, who scored 12 votes to emerge as chief whip.
The clerk of the parliament however, was elected unopposed.
In his inaugural address, the Speaker assured students in the faculty that his emergence would bring accountability and transparency to SOSSAITES.
Ojutiwon, who noted the faculty was politically conscious urged students to play politics calmly and as intelligently as possible.
The parliament electoral chairman, Dr. Dele Ashiru has also advised the officers to display high level of sportsmanship in their conduct during their term of office.
