The Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), has held it’s first award winners’ LECTURE for 2016, by Mrs Mabel Dorothy O. Segun

The lecture titled: “Towards Nation Building: The Importance of Children’s Literature,” delivered by Mrs. Mabel Dorothy, was her first since 2009, when she was bestowed with the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM).

Meanwhile, the award winners’ lecture, being one of the most important programmes of NNMA, is designed primarily to assist in creating the enabling environment in which healthy and intellectual discourse and exchange of ideas are fostered.

The basic objectives of the Award Winners’ Lectures are to officially and publicly promote the platform for the best and brightest of Nigerian Laureates to share with their compatriots, the fruits of their intellectual enquiry for national development.

The chairman of NNMA, Professor Etim Moses Essien, while speaking at the event, revealed that the price for the award is 10 million naira, saying that the governing body does not discriminate on persons deemed to be qualified for the award.

“It is not only restricted to intellectuals. Everybody who has creativity, and is outstanding in that creativity… is free to apply,” he added.

Essentially, each Laureate of NNOM is expected to deliver an Award Winners’ Lecture at least once in his/her lifetime.

The lectures are often held in different parts of the country and are mostly organized within University Communities in order to afford the general public and other stakeholders the opportunity to interact with with the Laureates, while contributing to the discussion on national programmes and priorities.
