The Department of Sociology, University Of Lagos, yesterday continued with the commemoration of their 50th anniversary with round table discussion and award presentation.
The venue, Afe Babalola Hall, was packed to its capacity by students of the Department of Sociology, and other members of the university community. Distinguished guests and notable personalities were all seated by 11:20am.
The head of the department, Dr Oluwafunmilayo Bammeke, gave the opening remarks. InIn her remarks, she said that the nation was in dire need of sociologists, hence the need for the round table discussion. In the same vein, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Iyiola Oni, gave the welcome speech. He said that in the past 50 years, the University of Lagos department of sociology has produced students that have proven themselves in various fields of life. The distinguished professor of Geography also remarked that the department has been useful to the entire Faculty of Social Sciences, therefore the department of sociology is the mother of all social sciences.
The round table discussion kick-started, with Professor Nwabueze calling the shots. He said that the concept of Sociology cannot be overemphasized in today’s society.
The Vice Chancellor, ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Ben Oghojafor, delivered the Vice Chancellor’s address to the gathering.
The speakers agreed that the department of sociology should re-engineer their students to capture the society, since the knowledge of sociology is needed to enable meaningful abd effective relationships with the society. Professor Omololu Soyombo said that the future of Nigeria is very bright as long as sociologists remain in existence, and that it is imperative for the political leaders in the country use technocracy in solving the social problems within the society.
