The 2018 Medical and Dental Induction Ceremony of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) took place on Wednesday 18th July at the New Great Hall at the school premises in Idi-Araba.

It was a day of both colour and sobriety. The inductees solemnly took their medical oaths affirmation while dressed in haute dresses, dapper suits highlighted by the bright induction gowns. Their faces were both subdued and excited, as they said wrapped up six tedious years of learning with a solemn oath to serve humanity in their chosen field.

For many, especially parents, relatives  and family members of the inductees, it was a day of pomp and pageantry, festive clothing, human and vehicular traffic and, of course, loads of pictures to mark the of  joyous occasion. For others other students of the college of medicine looking forward to their own induction, it was both inspirational and aspirational to see their friends and colleagues celebrate the special occasion.

The event started at 10am with a procession led by the Principal Assistant secretary (Academic), the National anthem, Opening prayer, introduction of Officials on the High table & Dignitaries by the MC, Dr. Oremosu (a lecturer in the department of Anatomy, CMUL). There was a welcome address by the College Secretary, Oladejo Azeez Esq. , a short address by the CMD Professor Chris Bode who was represented by the deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (dCMAC), Professor Adeyemo.

Induction lecture was delivered by Dr Adedamola V. Dacosta (a consultant at Aquagem Dental Clinic, Victoria Island, Lagos), who spoke on the rules of life in the medical profession. He encouraged the inductees to go after what they loved, always ask questions from senior colleagues and be willing to step out and pursue their dreams.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Professor F.E.A Lesi addressed the inductees, mentioning “hope and power to change a trend is in each individual”. He challenged them to be willing to do more than they are paid that eventually, they will be paid more than they did and encouraged them to practice medicine and their dealings with patients with conscience and dignity. He also prayed earnestly for God to be with them, and for sunshine to always shine on their path.

The Oath-Taking & Affirmation ceremony was officiated by the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Dr. Ibrahim A. Abdulmumini who reiterated the importance of abiding by the Code of Medical Ethics in Nigeria.

He commended the Provost, Professor Lesi on a great job training and developing quality doctors in one of the best Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. He also preached the importance of synergy between Colleges of medicine and the Teaching Hospitals and charged the inductees to practice Medicine in synergy with other cadres and fields of healthcare and highlighted the benefits of cooperation in the health team for patients.

The highlight of the day, the induction ceremony  marked by Oath-Taking, The Physician’s Pledge, the Physician’s Oath and Affirmation had  inductees publicly and solemnly declare and affirm to always subscribe to the Physician’s oath for the benefit of their patients and humanity.

The Chairman of the CMUL Alumni, a proud parent of a new doctor, Hon. Dr. Ajibayo Adeyeye (Special Adviser to the governor of Ondo state and former Majority leader, Lagos state House of Assembly), officially welcomed the new doctors into the fold and sashed each new doctor as a welcome act into the Alumni group. Each doctor shook hands and photographs with members of the high table, The Provost, Deputy Provost, Professor Abdulkareem (Dean of Student Affairs), Prof. Joseph Adeyemi (Dean of Faculty of Clinical Sciences), amongst others.

The ceremony ended at 1 pm with the closing prayer by a parent, Mr Adisa, the National Anthem and exit of the high table procession in reverse order. Finally, it was time for the new doctors to meet and celebrate with family members, friends, and well-wishers, and of course the beginning of the activities of the ever ready Steeple Chase Gang.
