It is already in wide circulation that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is meeting with the FG today in order to achieve a common ground with regards to the ongoing strike action.
ASUU embarked on the ongoing strike on Nov 5 last year in order to raise attention to its demands including the non-payment of earned academic allowances, funding of the revitalisation of Nigerian public universities, implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report, poor funding of state universities, among others.
Recall that ASUU and the Federal Government have had series of meetings — totalling six so far– which had ended in dreadlock. Today’s meeting would make it seven.
We at The Press Club, UNILAG, therefore enjoin all Nigerian students to disregard any news claiming that the strike action has been called off.
ASUU’s Chairman, Prof Ogunyemi, has made it clear that the outcome of today’s meeting proposed to hold at the Minister’s Conference Room by 3:30pm would determine their next line of action.
We, therefore, call on the University of Lagos Students and her community to remain calm while they wait for the outcome of this meeting.
Signed:
Ayo’ Olufolarin,
President.
Caleb Olonitola,
Secretary General.
Isaac Melchizedek Alesh,
Public Relation Officer.
