On Tuesday morning, Chief John Momoh, President of the UNILAG Alumni Association, has been appointed acting Chairman of the Governing Council, University of Lagos after the Federal Ministry of Education confirmed it.
Chief. Momoh, Chairman of Channels Television, will take over from the suspended Pro-chancellor, Wale Babalakin following the federal government directives.The Director of Press and Information in the ministry, Bem Goong, affirmed to an inquiry that Momoh has been named the acting Chairman of the Council.
“It is confirmed, John Momoh is now Acting Council Chair,” he said.
Chief Momoh appointment came after a letter was addressed to him Dated August 21, 2020, with reference number FME/PS/606/C.1/III/129 signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono.
The letter reads, “I am directed to request you to convene an emergency meeting of the governing council to consider and, if found suitable, approve the Senate nomination of the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos in line with the enabling Act.“You are to preside at the meeting in the absence of the substantive pro-chancellor/chairman of council who has had to recuse himself in line with the visitor’s directives.“You are to also submit a report on the decision of the council to the visitor through the honorable minister of education immediately thereafter.”
According to the letter, it was stated that Mr. Momoh is to oversee the “Emergency Meeting of the Governing.” And also to approve the nomination of the Acting Vice-Chancellor for the university, Prof Folasade Ogunsola in the absence of the pro-chancellor of the council following the visitor’s directive (Muhammadu Buhari).
However, an emergency governing council meeting is scheduled tohold on Tuesday before Wednesday’s slated inauguration of the visitation panel to the university.
