National Executive Council (NEC) is set to meet the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to discuss proceedings for the welfare of academic staff.

The NEC meeting will be held for two days starting, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th, February 2022. At this meeting, various issues stemming from the education will be deliberated upon and decisions will be taken.

Dr. Adelaja Odukoya confirmed this in a press conference held by the Lagos Zone of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at University of Lagos on the 8th of February 2022.

Dr. Olukoya said “ASUU members are ready for the resolution that will be taken by the National Executive Council meeting and the final decision will be given by the NEC.

“The Federal Government has refused, neglected and has adamantly done nothing to actually ensure that the 2009 ASUU/FG Renegotiation agreement is signed and Implemented.

He also made it known that ASUU members have remained on the same salaries since 2009 despite the deplorable economic conditions of the country, hyperinflation and devaluation of naira.

“Lecturers must be paid in a remuneration that is globally competitive.

“Our members are frustrated and increasingly agitated by the government’s apparent reluctance and foot-dragging on this important issue of welfare and existential condition.

He added that within the week, members of ASUU have been mobilised for the next line of action if government consultation does not yield satisfactory results.

“The union will have no choice than to speak in the language the government understands.”
