MARCH 22 — The male football team of the University of Lagos, Marines defeated Adamawa State University’s (ADSU) by two goals to nil. This is third set of group stage matches.
With this victory, the stout Marines finish second in the table, after winning their first game, one-nil, beating players of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) but losing to Kogi State University (KOSU) football team by one-nil.
The first goal of the game was scored during the 11th minute by right-back Salami Kehinde, a 400-level student of the Faculty of Education.
Omotoso, a forward, sent a screamer into the net in the 46th minute, as the first half of the match finally unwinded.
In the second half of the game, the Marines continued their domination of the opponents but squandered too many clear chances.
ADSU players had only one shot on target during this half.
Salami, the first goalscorer commented on Marines’ lapses.
“Actually, I noticed that we didn’t do a great compact … I noticed that some of our midfielders were trying to get the ball and release to the striker but were actually not moving with the ball well,” he said.
Salami said the loss to KOSU would not drag their spirits down, that they are back to winning and dare to advance to the next stage. They “are playing for the pride of the University,” he told TPC UNILAG.
Meanwhile, KOSU beat OOU three-nil to top the group table, qualifying for the quarter finals, too.
In their first game with ADSU, KOSU played a one-one tie, all goals and points shared equally.
The fixtures for the quarter finals will be released soon.
