Organizers of Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition (PAADC) have confirmed the return of the competition for its 6th annual edition.

About the competition

The Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition (PAADC) is an annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) design competition for Nigerian undergraduates; to encourage the development of indigenous solutions to Nigerian problems through science and technology.

PAADC is posed as Nigeria’s largest student-led design competition, using innovation and technology-driven ideas to create a safer and better Nigeria.

The competition aims to be a viable platform for undergraduate startups and tertiary institution hubs to groom talent and build innovations.

Background of the competition

The Professor Ayodele Awojobi Design Competition (PAADC) was established by the University of Lagos Engineering Society (ULES) in 2017 to encourage, promote, and celebrate undergraduates’ ingenuity, creativity, and indigenous solutions to societal problems.

PAADC aims to provide a diverse and enabling platform/environment for Nigerian undergraduates to push the boundaries of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in the development of indigenous solutions to Nigeria’s Problems.

PAADC also supports these proposed solutions by utilizing its extensive network of experts and investors, recognizing outstanding solutions, and supporting students financially.

Stories and Impact

The competition has had a significant imprint on problem-solving in Nigeria and has grown in prominence since its inception.

Engr. Titi Omo-Ettu, a telecommunications engineer, had this to say about the competition, “Professor Ayodele Awojobi was one soul that was passionate about engineering, development, innovation, the youth, Nigeria, and humanity. I’m glad that his legacy lives on with PAADC.”

Similarly, Anthony Abah, Chairman of the PAADC’s first edition, stated “The mind should not be tamed. It should be like an open parachute, free to taste the vastness of the universe and harness the power of imaginative thinking. Let us open our minds. Let us harness the power of technology. Let us compete in PAADC and make a better Nigeria

Editions

Since the competition’s inception, PAADC has had five editions. It has reached thousands of people and over 75 institutions across the country, with the competition’s impact growing with each edition.

The various editions featured brilliant and innovative ideas, with winners proposing solutions to problems in agriculture, education, healthcare, safety, and environmental sustainability, among other sectors.

Team MUFASA (PAADC 1.0)

Team MUFASA, the first PAADC winners, came up with an innovative idea based on an ultrasound reversing guide and a vehicle microcontroller that estimates the distance between a vehicle and any object, preventing collisions and road accidents.

Team PREST (PAADC 2.0)

Team PREST, the second edition winners, devised a technological solution to reduce tomato waste caused by improper storage, aiming to conserve food wastage.

Team HIVE (PAADC 3.0)

Team HIVE, PAADC 3.0 winners, devised a student-led technology learning community system that constructs robots to address Nigeria’s social issues while also imparting relevant industrial skills.

Team SEJJ (PAADC 4.0)

Team SEJJ, the 4th edition winners, devised a method for reducing indiscriminate plastic waste disposal in the environment by converting plastic waste into interlocking construction bricks.

TEAM RAWMAC (PAADC 5.0)

Team RAWMAC, the winners of the fifth edition, developed an innovation that recycles plastic waste materials and processes them into synthetic wood for woodwork, reducing pollution caused by plastic waste and fostering a cleaner ecosystem.

Organizers have just confirmed the return of competition for its 6th edition.
