Law students in fierce debate on: “Africa and The West”

Taslim Elias Chamber, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, on Friday organized a debate titled “The Manifesto”. The debate had in attendance as judges, Mr Femi Banwo, Mrs Adejumoke Olagbegi-Adelabu, Mr Michael Orimobi, Mr Toye Akinboro and Mr Seun Lari Williams.

The program started a few minutes past 1pm with the opening prayer and introduction of guests by Mr Great Opara, the General Secretary of the host students’ chamber. Earlier,  Mr Great listed the participating 12 associations, and afterwards,  Mr Femi Banwo, Partner Banwo and Ighodalo law firm declared the debate open by stating the rules of the debate.

After the first round of the debate,  7 associations were eliminated leaving 5 contestants; Book Club,  Maritime Forum,  Mooting Society,  Christian Law Students Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON) and The Gani Fawehinmi Students’ Chamber (GFSC). Consequently, the last round of the competition ended with the Maritime Forum, Book Club and GFSC emerging as 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

“The Manifesto” ended with the winners receiving monetary prizes for their brilliant performance. In her address, the Head of Chamber, Adebisi  Adeboyin said, “the essence of the debate is to help develop the advocacy skill of future lawyers”. And responding to a question by our correspondent, a contestant said “even though I did not win, I appreciate the platform it has given me to be a better speaker”.
