A Congratulatory Message & a Wake-Up Call to all Unilag Freshers
by Ayomide Olufolarin
Congratulations are in order. You’ve made it into the University of First Choice and the Nations Pride.
I understand that it wasn’t easy at all. In your group of 3 to 4 friends, only you made it.
In your family, it’s a rare opportunity.
You currently hold the title of the biggest boy or girl in your street. People now value you more than they did six months ago.
Rejoice! It’s a thing of joy, worth all the celebration, congratulatory messages and hype.
However, I want to remind you of a few things.
Just like the banker wakes up and dresses up for work, you have a duty to also wake up and do your school work.
Just like the Accountant is accountable for the company’s finance, you’re accountable for your academic success.
How well have you started?
Some have started on a good note, some averagely and some are even yet to start.
Wake up! Time is far spent! It’s less than 50 days to examination, the new year is left with about 250 days of 365!
You want to have fun?
There’s no harm in having fun as an undergraduate, if you must have fun, have it sensibly. Have it intellectually.
Are you the party lover??
It’s not against your academic work to party, but however note that you’re helping the organizers of those parties fulfil their dream and career. What are you doing to fulfil yours?
Are you the lazy type?
You will make little or no progress in this University.
The glory of your academics might be in your final year when your name appears on the good side of the convocation list. But it all starts now. The race is already on.
If you’ve not been serious with the semester, it’s not too late. That’s why this message is coming at the middle of the semester and not at the beginning, so you don’t forget it again too soon.
Once again I say congratulations. I wish you success as you journey through the campus life.
