Yesterday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria soared higher in their second flight at the AFCON 2023 by scoring the only goal in their game against Ivory Coast.
This clinched them their first win of the African Cup of Nations tournament after a tough face-off draw with Equatorial Guinea in their first game.
Yesterday’s game kicked off at 6 PM WAT and saw a first-half goalless draw despite a few decent attempts at netting from both sides.
6 minutes into the second half of the game, Diomande of Ivory Coast made a foul tackle on Victor Osimhen in the penalty area.
A VAR (Video Assistant Referee) review led the referee to award a penalty and William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria’s defender, shot a powerful kick into the middle of the net.
The Super Eagles would go on to guard their lead until the last whistle into the air of the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé.
This is an important victory that puts the Green Eagles in second place in Group A, one step behind Equatorial Guinea and above Ivory Coast in third.
Guinea-Bissau who retained the last position will challenge Nigeria in her last group-stage match of the tournament.
A win or draw will be crucial for qualification into the Round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations.
