Millennium Fellows Organise Cleanup Exercise with UNILAG DVC

The Millennium Fellows Class of 2025 at the University of Lagos on Saturday, December 13 carried out a campus-wide cleanup exercise in collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) and Mass Communication Student Association (MCSA), as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible citizenship within the university community.

The exercise commenced in the early hours of the day and covered major routes and surroundings from the Faculty of Arts through to the Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS). Armed with cleaning tools and protective gear, the Fellows alongside student volunteers, cleared litter, cleared gutters , and ensured proper waste disposal across the affected areas.

The presence of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor during the exercise underscored the university management’s support for student-driven initiatives aimed at improving the campus environment. The cleanup also served as a platform for engaging students and passersby on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and adopting environmentally friendly habits on campus.

According to members of the Millennium Fellows, the initiative was inspired by the need to contribute tangibly to the well-being of the university while advancing the goals of the Millennium Fellowship programme. The Fellowship encourages students to design and implement social impact projects that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on sustainable cities, climate action, and environmental protection.

Beyond improving the physical outlook of the campus, the cleanup exercise fostered a sense of collective responsibility among participants. Students who witnessed the activity were encouraged to see environmental care not as the responsibility of authorities alone, but as a shared duty of everyone within the university community.

The Millennium Fellows Class of 2025 expressed appreciation to the university management, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and all volunteers who contributed to the success of the exercise.

They also reiterated their commitment to executing more initiatives that promote sustainability, leadership, and positive social impact across the UNILAG campus.
