UNILAG VC Introduces Emergency Hotlines To Enhance Campus Safety

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folashade T. Ogunsola, has introduced emergency hotlines and registered SIM cards to strengthen safety and emergency response across the University.

The presentation took place on Wednesday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office and was attended by Head of key operational units responsible for the safety, health and welfare of members of the University community.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Quality Assurance and SERVICOM (QAS), Professor Olufemi Saibu, said the initiative, known as UNILAG Rapid Response Lines, would improve communication and enhance emergency preparedness. He explained that the hotlines would enable faster coordination and real-time response during emergencies.

Professor Saibu noted that units such as the Medical Centre, Security Unit, Safeguarding Centre, Student Affairs Division, Counselling Unit and Fire Service Unit would benefit directly from initiative. He commended the Vice-chancellor for her leadership and commitment to improving campus safety.

In her remarks, Professor Ogunsola said the initiative was aimed at ensuring prompt emergency response and safeguarding lives and property within the University.  According to her, effective communication is essential for managing emergencies, adding that no distress call should go unanswered.

She reiterated that the safety and welfare of students, staff and visitors remain a top priority of her administration.

Heads of Units at the events expressed appreciation for the initiative. The Acting Director of the Safeguarding Centre, Dr. Abiola Akinyode-Afolabi, described it as timely, noting that improved communication would enhance emergency intervention and coordination. The Coordinator of the Security Unit, Mr David Omotosho, and the Chief Fire Officer, Mr Jimoh Wasiu Oriyomi also praised the Vice-Chancellor for addressing operational challenges.

The events also highlighted the impact of previously provided tricycles to security and fire service units at the Akoka and Idi-araba Campuses, which were said to have improved patrol and emergency response activities.
